Advanced Digital Twin for Manufacturing Integration:Boosting Taiwan's Industry 4.0 Productivity

In 2011, Germany took the lead in proposing the concept of Industry 4.0 (the fourth industrial revolution) at the Hanover Fair as a way to enhance industrial competitiveness. Since then, manufacturing strategies have been proposed around the world, such as the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (U.S.), MIC 2025 (China), Strategy for Manufacturing Industry's Innovation 3.0 (South Korea), Industry 4.1J (Japan), etc. are all trying to compete for specification dominance, exclusivity and global market share of new generation technologies. In order to keep up with the pace of industrial development in advanced countries, our country has launched Taiwan Productivity 4.0 Initiative and 5+2 Industry Innovation Plan. It has carried out multi-faceted research and exploration on various innovation visions mentioned in Industry 4.0, hoping to find the next step for various industries. Generational competitive niche.
Starting from 2021, Chair Professor Hung-Yin Tsai of the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering, National Tsinghua University will serve as the host and implement "Promotion Program on Advanced Digital Twin of Manufacturing Integration Technology", aiming to promote the intelligent transformation and upgrading of Taiwan’s manufacturing industry by integrating virtual and physical processing technologies, in order to enhance international competitiveness. This project focuses on the development of digital twin technology, edge computing technology, and smart composite processing technology, and has already accumulated considerable highlights. The participating teams of this achievement exhibition include the teams respectively leading by Professor Shyh-Leh Chen (National Chung Cheng University), Chen Liang-Chia, Meng-Shiun Tsai, Wen-Yuh Jywe (National Taiwan University), Mi-Ching Tsai (National Cheng Kung University), Jenq-Shyong Chen (National Chung Hsing University), and Ming-Tsang Li (National Tsing Hua University).
Highlights of this project include:
1. An edge computing module that can simultaneously capture external sensor signals and upload machine tool server data;
2. Metal 3D printing/five-axis processing technology that can customize one product, combine addition and subtraction, and integrate virtual and real objects;
3. IOT smart knife handle that can be calibrated remotely;
4. Innovative laser plasma coating technology;
5. Online wafer AOI virtual and real measurement prototype system;
6. Green additive manufacturing;
7. Process and manufacture instantaneous dynamic wireless sensing systems.
The teams of the project attend this exhibition, hoping to enhance experience exchanges, mutual observation, create more cross-field cooperation opportunities, transform academics into local industry value, accelerate industrial upgrading, and promote developments of Taiwan’s Smart manufacturing industry. In addition to investing in research and implementation, in order to enhance international technological competitiveness, the project office also provides funding subsidies to enable the team to conduct substantial cooperation with internationally renowned academic institutions, such as the University of Munich in Germany, the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautics at UCLA, and Purdue University Polytechnic Institute in the United States.
